Venganza! The Bulls are Back.
Andres Garcia Peña began his bullfighting series in 1993-1994 while he was living in Barcelona, Spain. The high-rise apartment building that he lived in looked directly down into a bullfighting stadium; so each Saturday and Sunday from his nose-bleed seats, he watched the bullfights. He felt the bulls never had a fair shot at winning. Andres wanted to the bulls to win once in awhile! This in turn inspired the series “Revenge of the Bulls.” The scene is Bull Heaven- the bulls from past fights who died in the ring are now angels, smoking and drinking, whooping and hollering, cheering for the bull, fighting the matador. And in Andres’ bull heaven, the bull always wins!
This series proved to be highly successful in galleries throughout the US and Europe throughout the 90’s. Then in 2003, at the grand opening of Galeria de Ida Victoria, we were lucky enough to have 5 from this original group of paintings, and they quickly became the most talked about and sought after pieces in the show. Maia Norman, wife of influential young British artist Damien Hirst, purchased two for their personal collection. Then ten years after his experience in Barcelona, Andres revisited his zany world of Bull Heaven from his studio/loft in Brooklyn, NY with a new eye, and a more experienced hand. A Solo show here at the gallery was the culmination of a year of painting this theme. The show was a huge success, selling over half of the 20 pieces on opening night! Now more than 15 years after he began this series, the bulls are once again returning to Los Cabos! Andres will unveil the newest paintings from his wildly popular on-going series in an exhibition entitled “Venganza! The Bulls are back.” Thursday, April 8th, 2010. Please join Andres and the gallery to celebrate his newest works. Andres was recently added to the permanent collection of New York City’s Latin American Museum, Museo Barrio on 5th Avenue. The curator specifically requested 2 paintings from this series for the Opening Night Exhibition. |
